Hanging in the Rift

Kuriftu Day ViewSo I finally got a chance to go out to the Rift valley this weekend – although it wasn’t really intentional.  We were supposed to be on a flight to Harar (a walled Muslim city from the at least the 12th century), but Ethiopian Airlines gave us the wrong time… they gave me an itinerary that the flight was for 8am but stupid me didn’t look at the actual ticket – turned out it left at 7am… no Ethiopian calendar excuse this time…

so instead we headed out to some of the nearby lakes and into the Rift Valley – amazing!  First stop: Kuriftu Resort and Spa… man, this is definitely one of the top hotels i’ve been to in Africa… and for only $100/night including a free massage… i’m going back!

Lake Langano Rift Valleythe next stop: Lake Langano – right in middle of Ethiopia’s part of the Rift Valley.  It’s the only lake you can actually swim in as long as you don’t mind swimming in red/brown coloured water – the lake is super high in iron so maybe if you’re deficient it’s a good idea… i had more fun walking around in the forest near the ‘eco-lodge’ we stayed at – monkeys and baboons all over – almost made up for the big ass spiders everywhere… and no i ain’t got a phobia of spiders… i got a phobia of spider bites…
